Wood Anniversary

Last month marked five years of SetonnoteS. Since starting my weekdaily columns, I’ve written, posted and emailed over 1300 commentaries on a wide variety of topics, sourced by a seemingly-limitless pool of impulses, thoughts and moods. Thank you for being the audience.

The point of SetonnoteS is therapy for the author, and also to assuage a deep-seated need to spread the word about good and evil. Okay, maybe that last part is too high-fallutin’. Put another way, I think our nation is off track and has been for three decades. I write to get us back on track, to illuminate both the successes and failures, that we might garner more of the former and expense the latter.

On occasion I’ve been accused to sounding too angry. Not that there isn’t plenty to be upset about, but ire doesn’t usually persuade so occasionally I’ve tried to take a less vituperative approach. The problem is that the Bush machine is so vile, their surrogates so vicious, their lies so venal, that I frequently fall off the nobility wagon.

Such was the case recently when I accused McCain and Guiliani of political prostitution. I thought I was being too harsh, accusing these sea-scum of all but treason, if not against our country, then against basic human decency. They’re not as ugly as Zell Miller, but they should know better.

So it was that I was surprised to receive a handful of responses cheering my assault. All were from women, two from first-time correspondents. Perhaps it indicates that the outrageous deceit of the Republicans is as obscene as I think it is and more people are bothered by it. Maybe the 22,000,000 single women who didn’t vote in 2000 will all go to the polls and vote for Kerry.

The degeneracy of this administration and their supporters -- along with the complicity of the wussful Democrats and the shamefully silent -- scandalizes the very notion of what it means to be an American. If I couldn’t write such thoughts, I think I’d explode.

And that’s SetonnoteS...I’m Tony Seton.
