An Undecided Voter
My aunt informed me today that she is one of the undecideds in this election and I found that to be very good news. Because it wasn’t too long ago that she was supporting Bush. She’s a snowbird who lives in New York during the warmer months and then migrates to Palm Beach. At both ends, she lives a country club life, keeping busy so as not to get depressed, two years after my uncle died.
The last election she was quite possibly one of those reasonably attentive voters who was still confused by the butterfly ballot. Many people were, and even Pat Buchanan, who was the recipient of thousands of errant voters, acknowledged the situation. One speculates that if the authorities had offered a normal ballot that Gore would have carried Palm Beach County by a margin large enough to deprive Bush of his stolen election.
My aunt was supporting Bush because her friends were and that was mostly based on the perception -- deeply flawed -- that he was good for Israel. The truth is that our unvarnished endorsement of Sharon is what has fueled the terrorism from Gaza to the West Bank and true supporters of Israel know the country needs new leadership.
As so many supporters of the United States are now seeing. Even those who are ardent about protecting Israel are seeing that the rest of the administration record makes backing Bush nigh on impossible. My aunt reports that she’s heard many people, Republicans and Democrats alike -- and particularly, she noted, the wealthy -- who say they can’t vote for Bush this time.
We’re going to have further discussions about whom she and her friends might vote for in November, probably the most important election in modern times. I won’t push Kerry, but rather the need to get our nation back on track. I’ll focus on where we are and who got us here. Once that’s clear, there’ll be no turning back.
And that’s SetonnoteS...I’m Tony Seton.
