Bits & Pieces

Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook...

Da-deet-da-deet-deet.....Too bad the Bush Boy doesn’t read. Like Poppy’s book written five years ago, in which he explained why he didn’t finish off Saddam in 1991. He wrote, "Trying to eliminate Saddam...would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq....There was no viable ‘exit strategy’ we could see...Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land."

Da-deet-da-deet-deet....One of the reasons not to go off crusading around the globe is that there’s so much to be done here in the richest country on the planet. For instance, we might straighten out the health care mess. Consider that American women rank 19th in how long they live compared to women in other countries when they used to rank first. And American men rank 28th. At the other end of the problem, America ranks 25th in infant mortality, and in the rate of death among our under 5 year-olds we fall behind 31 other countries.

Da-deet-da-deet-deet....The Almighty Ashcroft’s waronterrorism here at home hasn’t been terribly successful; just terribly. The inJustice department has arrested some 1,200 people on terrorist charges since Nine-Eleven but has only managed to bring a handful to trial. Mostly they’ve had to let people go because they don’t have any evidence, something most courts still require. Some cases have been tossed for prosecutorial misconduct. Another high-profile case in Guantanamo was dropped this week.

Da-deet-da-deet-deet....Finally, on a lighter note, the folks in Wisconsin have got to be chafing at the bovine bit a bit. Known forever as cheeseheads, they are projected to lose the crown as the nation’s leading cheese producer to the "Got Milk?" folks in California. For the record, Americans are now eating on average 30 pounds of cheese every year.

And that’s SetonnoteS...I’m Tony Seton.
