The UnChristian President
An ugly proof of just how dire is our political situation is the fact the George Bush calls himself a Christian. Worse, people buy the guise, despite myriad facts that contradict the assertion. He invades a foreign nation on the basis of lies, he ravages the environment, he allows millions of children in the richest country in the world to go to bed hungry, he deprives our elderly of decent health care, he neglects our schools, fosters corporate greed...what on god’s green earth is Christian about this man.
The essentials of our spirituality are less about a religious doctrine per se but rather reflect a moral code that parallels The Christ Consciousness. That is, it is not about church as much as it is about basic human decency...don’t lie, steal or kill. That differentiation conversely supports our bedrock belief that government and church should remain separate while intending that our government should behave according to these same moral tenets.
George Bush is immoral. The policies of his administration are obscene. And yet, somehow many people who call themselves Christian are supporting him, primarily -- sometimes exclusively -- because he calls himself Christian. These is no justification for their behavior. They are as immoral as he is in backing his perversion and corruption. They slander the very beliefs that we ascribe to Christ.
Honest religion, like patriotism, requires more than blind allegiance. One does not serve god or his nation by reading a script. The healthy believer contributes his own mind and heart, participating in the creation of today and tomorrow, for his sake, his children’s and posterity. It is this cosmic dance that gives purpose to his life; a worthy god would demand no less.
