Take Back America

There are three parties responsible for the mess we are in and before I identify them, let’s be clear about the mess. The economy is running a half-trillion dollar deficit; we’ve added $1.7 trillion to the national debt under this Administration, which works out to roughly $14,000 the average taxpayer owes, on which he’s paying interest. We have lost the trust of most of the planet; nations which were our allies for decades now view us as not only odious but dangerous. We used to have the finest education and health care systems and now we rank behind most other developed nations.

Now, the three elements responsible for this situation, first by promulgating it and then by letting it worsen, are the politicians who have been bought by special interests, the mainstream media which practices propaganda rather than journalism, and finally the general public which has been sitting on the couch, ignoring its citizenry responsibilities to stay informed and involved.

This does not auger well for our future. The balance of power, as it were, is failing on all three legs. Worse, no one seems to be acknowledging the situation let alone acting to do something about it. Mostly, Republicans and Democrats are engaged in a tug-‘o-war protecting their turf, hurling epithets about liberal this and neo-con that. It’s like fussing about moving the deck chairs on the Titanic. No one is dealing with the fact that our ship of state is sinking.

Of course, it may be that we’ve earned, even if we don’t deserve, the consequences. We have propped up murderous dictatorships around the globe, allowed -- nay, encouraged -- our corporations to pillage from pole to pole and neglected our children. This isn’t America bashing, although it may sound like it. Rather, it’s a call to those who cherish our ideals to take back our country from the greedy and ignorant...and quickly.
