Crippled Asses

It says something about our political process when long-lamed liberal Ted Kennedy is one of the more cogent voice among Democrats. He’s bright and articulate and right on some of the more critical issues of our time, like health care, education and Iraq, but he’s hardly a viable standard bearer. Nor is Robert Byrd, the ancien from West Virginia who’s shown more concern for our country and its constitution than anyone of either party for years. And now we hear that John Kerry may run again in ‘08...for president.

The donkeys don’t do much better on the local level. Consider Fernando Ferrer, the former Bronx borough president, who has pocketed tens of thousands of tobacco dollars for his run against Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg who banned smoking in Gotham. New Yorkers like the ban, and even though they are largely Dems, they won’t toss Mikey out for a whore.

One Dem who is being shown the door is California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley. Kev is the regrettably-incompetent son of a vaunted San Francisco mayor. Like other pol sons -- for instance, Al Gore -- he should have chosen another line of work. Shelley is renowned for his outrageous to the point of litigious treatment of staff, and really stepped in it when he diverted public funds into political programs. Some California Democrats are speaking out publically now that it’s time for him to resign.

Another Cal Dem, Senate leader Don Perata, is being investigated by the FBI for misusing his office for personal gain, tying in his political consultant son and hundreds of thousands of shuffled dollars. A bright, powerful public figure, Perata may actually be clean, though few believe such and many wonder why he compromised himself for small potatoes, considering his talent. He’s walking around with a political limp, making life all the more easy for the Governator to have his way.

I stopped thinking of myself as a Democrat during the second Clinton administration. It wasn’t about the stained dress, though that was deplorable, nor even the perjury before the federal grand jury. Rather, it was the fact that during the thriving economy, Slick Willie accomplished nothing.

And now we have Nancy Pelosi supporting an anti-choicer for DNC head and Joe Biden and his fawns ratifying Condosleazing Rice to be Secretary of State. It’s one thing not to win, but it’s quite another not to stand up for principles. The Democratic Party today fails on both counts.

And that’s SetonnoteS...I’m Tony Seton.
