Some items from the news...

For those who say that gun control legislation is a waste of time, we now discover that 160-thousand people were stopped from buying guns in the first year of the instant background check. These were mostly convicted felons, who were not only bad guys to begin with but were dumb enough to try putting their names into the system. In other words, people who really shouldn’t have guns. And for the four years leading up to the new system, the Brady Bill stopped another 310-thousand for buying handguns. It’s not that these people couldn’t find guns another way -- like on almost any street corner in parts of every city — but what it means is that a lot of people who shouldn’t have guns, won’t.

Item two - Issue number one for a third of American voters — honesty. That’s right. Over even leadership skills and philosophy of government, the people are looking for candidates who tell the truth. What a concept. And if this attitude holds, it should augur well for the straightforward types like Bradley and McCain. Liars and scripted candidates — and there’s only a slight difference between them — are going to have a harder time.

Item three - Contrary to what the puff addicts say, second hand smoke is lethal. A new study says the danger to some women particularly is six times greater that if they live with a smoker they will die prematurely. Think about it when you see people smoking in their cars, especially taking their children along for the -- cough, cough -- ride.

Item four - Speaking of health, the illustrious black-robed nine — that is, the Supreme Court — is going to decide if the FDA should have say over tobacco products. Now I can appreciate that tobacco company lawyers may want to quibble about who’s got what jurisdiction over cigarettes, but until they own up to their responsibility for killing 450-thousand Americans every year, their argument is just smoke.

Item five - speaking of speaking, the folks who continue to flog the abortion issue have it wrong. No one is for abortion. And everyone pro-life. The fact is that the great majority of people believe that women should have the right to choose whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term, especially if they make a negative decision in the first three months. Over 60-percent of pregnancies in our country are unwanted, and that results in some 1.2-million abortions every year. Surprisingly few of those who would deny the right of choice are willing to provide information about birth control to those who are getting pregnant. Hello? If they don’t get pregnant, they will never need an abortion.
