Foreign Affairs
It’s easy just to complain but more rewarding to suggest solutions. So pshaw to both McCain and Obama. Here’s some of what our country really needs to reform our foreign policy.
First, we shouldn’t have American military on foreign shores. We should bring home our troops from the 132 countries where they are stationed and put them under the authority of local officials to make our own streets safe and borders secure.
Second, it’s time we stopped our chest-thumping, knuckle-dragging superpower game. We spend more on our military than all of the rest of the world combined, and it doesn’t make us any safer.
Third, let’s re-enfranchise the United Nations by paying our dues and ridding the organization of its nepotism and corruption. The world needs a policeman for places like Darfur and the Afghan-Pakistan border, and everyone would be a lot better off with an international force instead of American troops.
Fourth, to make the U.N.’s work easier, and put our foreign policy on a moral footing, we should cease all arms sales. The French and the Israelis can always fill the gap, but it’s time dictators and terrorists weren’t oppressing and slaughtering innocents with American-made ordnance. Our supplying Israel with cluster bombs and our refusal to end the use of land mines have been an offense to decency.
Fifth, the foreign aid we to provide to those in need around the globe should be what America does best – training, know-how and innovation – and it should be coordinated through an international relief organization so it is delivered most efficiently where it can best be used.
Sixth, we should establish normal diplomatic ties with Cuba. It would be benefit our agriculture interests and would be better for South Florida. We should also give Guantanamo back to Cuba, after cleaning up the military and toxic waste there; it could make great Club Med.
