Dear Senator Obama
A letter to Barack Obama.
Sir, this election is yours to win. John McCain looks like he’s gonna help you with his vice presidential choice, his scurrilous TV commercials which plumb new depths of deceit, and his clear ignorance of the critical issues that the new president will face. That doesn’t mean you should think of coasting into the White House. Such a ride may get you in, but you won’t have the mandate you will need to bring about the serious changes our country needs to get back us on track.
What you need is an overwhelming victory – overcoming the racists and the post-Clinton plumbing vote – to bring this country together behind your candidacy, in support of your presidency, and you can get that in a single speech. I’ve written some of it for you, and all you have to do is deliver it from your heart.
You have to call on all Americans to end the divisions among us. There is too much conflict based on age, gender, religion, skin color, and heritage. Our national security depends on standing united. Regaining our legacy, solving our problems, and moving forward toward a healthy and productive future for our children and their children requires our working together as one people.
So you take the first step toward eliminating the distinctions between us. Call for an end to the use of hyphenates. No more African-American. No more Hispanic-, Asian, or Native-American. Let no one put their past before being American.
Declare that you no longer will answer to the term African-American. Say that you are an American, first and foremost. Being American to you means walking the path charted by Washington, Jefferson and Adams, by Lincoln, Roosevelt and Kennedy. Their choice was democracy, freedom, and progress.
That, you say, is the course that we are all committed to. America is a nation of great history and enormous potential. We are a people of imagination, discovery, and innovation.
Call us to serve our country, Senator.
