Past Far Right
There are reports that conservative leaders are planning a confab just two days after the election to map their future. This, regardless of whether John McCain wins on the fourth. Their intention is to separate themselves from the McCain campaign, which seems a reasoned idea for clear conservatives. Their plan is to have Sarah Palin lead them.
What? Reason has flown out the window. This is someone who has dragged the McCain candidacy to defeat. Had he picked Mitt Romney, Rudy Guiliani, or even Fred Thompson, McCain would be neck-and-neck with Barack Obama...at least.
If these conservatives think Palin represents the next step in conservative thought, they need a new thought. She is an anti-intellectual, anti-science, straight-jacket moralist who defies the foundation tenets of freedom in our Constitution with every fiber of her being.
She has been such a pitbull the McCain people have lost control of her. Her vitriol and vituperation have even visibly distressed the top of the ticket. Even Alaskans are expressing their disapproval of their governor in considerable numbers.
Some thoughtful commentators, once counted on for lock-step support of everything Republican, have complained of the sordid campaign in general and the choice of Palin in particular. Instead of being praised for their integrity, they have received withering criticism from the wing-nuts who have brought the Republican party to an historic low.
I confess to some real satisfaction that these former standard bearers are getting a taste of the ugliness that has been slathered on fair-minded folks who have been seeking an open and civil dialogue.
What’s a thoughtful conservative to do if the party is taken over by the depraved cast of a Diane Arbus album? Perhaps they will think it’s time to roost elsewhere. No, not go with the Democrats. Maybe form a new party.
