Fritjof Capra, who wrote “The Tao of Physics” and “The Turning Point” noted that at times of transformation, the world seemed to spin faster, and those who lacked internal balance tended to fly out to the side. Such conditions, he said, were marked by an increase in cultist activities as people, feeling a loss of moorings, gave up their responsibility and grabbed for whatever they could.
Fundamentalism has answered the call for many people suffering from a feeling of chaos and not understanding that the only way to find balance is by going inside themselves for the truth. The desperation is so corrosive of personal moral authority that they buy into the crowds of similarly lost and frightened people. Viz, the mega churches and the hypocritical, flipfloping sheepherders, and how many of them are caught with their hands in other people’s pockets.
These thoughts came to mind when I got a note from my former preacher friend, Wayne, who was responding to the Palin hype. “She’s creepy. I met a lot of Sarah Palin types when I was in the ministry. Part of my long sad history of dealing with these born again fanatics in every parish that I served. Many Pastors found themselves losing their parishes because of the trouble caused by these self-righteous judgmental controlling people. Now, here they are knocking on the door of the Presidency. Sends a chill up my spine. ”
There is an unAmerican degeneracy about these extremists who are ready to force their beliefs on the rest of us, in denial of the foundation principles of our democratic republic. They don’t believe in freedom of religion or separation of church and state. They are obsessively convinced that their way is right and everyone else is wrong. They are teaching their children their beliefs as facts. The worst of them believe they will only be saved when the world is destroyed, and they are looking forward to it.
