SetonnoteS from 1999

Ciao (used to express greeting or farewell)   (12/31/99)
Consider the irony that Time magazine named Albert Einstein to be the man of the century. First of all, the name of the magazine. And second, Einstein essentially proved that time is more or less a figment of our own imagination. Or if not imagination, then certainly perspective.

Tying One On   (12/30/99)
Have I driven when I shouldn’t have? Yes. Many years ago. Have I had accidents? I bumped the back of a truck and dented my fender. More than twenty years ago, and I still shudder to think that I thought I knew what I was doing at the time. More stupid youth than alcohol, but both regrettable conditions.

(1) Think (2) Speak   (12/29/99)
In a world with Tammy Faye Bakker and Howard Stern, Monica Lewinksy and Dennis Rodman, even flagrant and ostentatiously inept narcissism should hardly make a ripple. Of course, they all live in a different world, where such thinking -- and I use the verb loosely — is de rigueur, as in rigor mortis of the mind.

Black 'n White And Read All Over    (12/28/99)
But in truth, what I was laughing about wasn’t funny...not in the ho-ho sense. Rather I was reacting to the normal curiosities reported in the newspaper. Maybe because there are so many people on the planet, there are many people acting in mindlessly questionable ways.

Go Figure   (12/27/99)
In the Senate, those who supported the industry got an average of $38,000 in campaign contributions in the first nine months of this year, while those in opposition only got an average of $6,000. In the House, supporters got $18,000, while opponents picked up only $6,700.

Merry Christmas   (12/24/99)
I still don’t feel Christmas-y. Maybe it’s because we’re having sunshine every day instead of rain, and the temperature has been climbing over seventy. But I think it’s deeper.

Peanuts   (12/23/99)
The creator of the Peanuts cartoon strip is putting down the comic’s pen, because of illness. Schultz has been one of the most prolific, prolific what? A cartoonist? A journalist? A social commentator? Entertainer? All of the above. His work is published in more than 75 countries.

Pray For Education   (12/22/99)
We need to resolve these matters and move forward. We can’t remain mired in a slothful repartee that just looks for new slogans to reiterate the same arguments.

The Meaning Of Life   (12/21/99)
I also think that just as our species is on verge of a breath-catching transformation, so too is our nation poised to regain its heritage, to assume its proper mantle, to lead us all forward to an exciting and purposeful new way of thinking and living.

Tripping - The Light Phastastik   (12/20/99)
It doesn't make sense to spend hundreds of thousands and maybe millions of dollars to try to try then try to incarcerate this indefatigable target of national scorn? Come on. Go after drug dealers and corrupt politicians instead.

Thank You, Joseph Heller   (12/17/99)
My appetite for the story was insatiable, even with all that I didn’t truly understand, and had never been close to experiencing, even from another descriptions. War movies weren’t like what Heller described. These people were crazy. And they wanted to go home.

Eat Your Own Deduction   (12/16/99)
It’s lunacy to tax people for being productive. We should get our needs met out of the excess. By taxing spending, we would stimulate creativity and growth, and at the same time, encourage conservation, humility, and, frugality.

Strike Free   (12/15/99)
Personally I think the whole union thing needs to be re-thunk. Let’s start with no strikes by municipal employees. In fact, there should be no municipal unions. For the most part they are political entities with far more power than they deserve, which they usually exercise to extort ridiculous contracts from weak-kneed politicians.

Information Plee-ase   (12/14/99)
It’s fine with me that the phone company charges those who are too lazy to look up a number. But phone booths, uh-uh. And new phone numbers -- of course there shouldn’t be a charge.

It's Not Contempt   (12/13/99)
We will continue to just play around the edges until enough people who have seen the light gain enough sway to defrock the currently-unbridled military-industrial complex. Once we evolve to a critical mass level -- meaning 20% — we will make the turn and the majority of the rest of the people will follow.

Items   (12/10/99)
For those who say that gun control legislation is a waste of time, we now discover that 160-thousand people were stopped from buying guns in the first year of the instant background check. These were mostly convicted felons, who were not only bad guys to begin with but were dumb enough to try putting their names into the system. In other words, people who really shouldn’t have guns.

E-Sanctity   (12/9/99)
I propose immediate federal legislation that would institute regulations against tampering with email and would impose as serious penalties on those who steal passwords as people who interfere with the postal system. There should also be the funds and personnel to go after these miscreants and bring them to justice.

NASA - Need A Second Apinion   (12/8/99)
You’d think for all the money we pour into the black hole, NASA would get the basics right. I mean, here they are planning to send people all over the universe, and they can’t safely land two unmanned probes into the surface of Mars. Not a good start, considering they had just gone up looking for water.

There Is No Homeless Problem    (12/7/99)
For too long, we have failed to deal with the reality of the people living outside, in the alleys, under cardboard, under ground. We call them the homeless, but that’s ridiculously uninformative. Why are they homeless?

Millennium Zulu Event   (12/6/99)
For those of you like my wife who think that going out to celebrate New Year’s Eve is for amateurs...but, you feel obligated to posterity to acknowledge the new millennium...have I got a plan for you.

Facts In The Way Of Opinion   (12/3/99)
It’s kind of strange how we have organized our social structure with mores, rules, and laws. The incongruities and hypocrisy would be laughable, if they weren’t at such a cost.

Trust Is A Four-Letter Word   (12/2/99)
If we wait for Congress to police itself, we will wait in vain. Which is why I will only vote for people of integrity. Who are also good to their staff.

Statistically Speaking  (12/1/99)
Nonetheless, when I had finished my presentation, I was cornered by an unpleasant woman who felt it was her duty to accuse me of sexism for using the quote. I acquiesced courteously, because back then, you didn’t just slap her silly for being stupid.
